Kitchen Tips: Keep dirty utensils soaked in the sink overnight? Know why the problem of insects and bad smell may increase

It is a common practice in many homes to leave the utensils in the sink filled with water and dish soap instead of washing them immediately after eating. By doing this, the food stuck on the utensils becomes soft and cleaning becomes easier in the morning. However, soaking the utensils for some time and leaving them in dirty water overnight is not the same thing.

When dirty utensils remain in the sink for a long time, food residues, moisture and dirt keep accumulating. Due to this, along with the bad smell in the kitchen, the chances of insects coming into the kitchen can also increase.
It's okay to soak for a while, but don't leave it for hours.
If food is badly stuck to a vessel, soaking it in water for some time can make cleaning easier. This method is especially useful for softening dry or burnt food.
But it is not necessary to keep the utensils immersed in water the whole night. Due to staying in water for a long time, food remains get mixed in the water and dirt can accumulate on the utensils, sink and surrounding surfaces. By morning this layer may become sticky, which may require more effort in cleaning.

Bad smell may start coming from the sink
If dirty utensils and things like leftover food and gravy remain in the sink for several hours, an unpleasant smell starts to arise in the kitchen. Strong smelling food residues can further aggravate this problem.
Wooden spoons, cutting boards and other porous items can easily retain moisture and odors. Therefore, it is important to keep them thoroughly clean and dry after using.
Ants and cockroaches can get food
Small pieces of food left on utensils left in the sink overnight can attract ants, cockroaches and other insects. If they get continuous food and water at a place, they may start coming to the same area again and again.
Especially lack of cleanliness in the kitchen, open food, wet sink and garbage accumulated in the dustbin can create a favorable environment for insects. Therefore, it is important not only to wash utensils but also to keep the sink and the area around it clean.
What to do if you cannot wash the utensils immediately?
If it is not possible to wash dishes immediately after eating, remove food remains first instead of leaving them dirty in the sink for a long time. If needed, utensils with stuck food can be soaked in hot water and dish soap for some time.
After this, wash the utensil thoroughly and dry it. If there is a dishwasher in the house, then the used utensils can be kept directly in it instead of storing them in the sink.

Make a habit of emptying the sink before sleeping
To keep the kitchen clean, emptying the sink before sleeping at night can be a good habit. Along with washing the utensils, also clean the food pieces that have fallen in the sink. Also keep removing food debris stuck in the drain regularly.
Apart from this, it is also important to keep the sponge and kitchen cloth clean, because dirt and microorganisms can accumulate in these things which remain constantly moist. Empty the dustbin on time and clean the surfaces that came in contact with raw meat thoroughly with soap and water.
Overall, a little delay in cleaning dishes is usually not a problem, but leaving them in the sink overnight with food residue is not considered good practice in terms of kitchen hygiene. It is better to clean the utensils as soon as possible and keep the sink empty at night.
