New Delhi, September 30 (IANS). Bank branches will remain closed for several days in October 2026 due to festivals and regular weekly holidays. In such a situation, if you have to deposit a cheque, get a demand draft made, get your KYC updated or avail any other branch-based service, then first check the bank's holiday calendar. The special thing is that some holidays in October will be applicable to the entire country, while many holidays will be limited to specific states and cities.
According to the holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks will remain closed for a total of 16 days in October, including all the states. Bank holidays are decided on the basis of local festivals and regional festivals. Apart from this, banks remain closed on all Sundays and also on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.
There are some days in October when banks will remain closed in almost all the states. These include 2 October (Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti), 4 October (Sunday), 10 October (second Saturday), 11 October (Sunday), 18 October (Sunday), 24 October (fourth Saturday) and 25 October (Sunday).
There will be no normal banking operations in the branches on these days, although digital banking services will continue.
There will be additional bank holidays in many states of Northeast and Eastern India due to the festive season. Banks will remain closed in Agartala on October 17 on the occasion of Maha Saptami.
On October 19, due to Maha Ashtami and Durga Puja, bank branches will remain closed in Agartala, Aizawl, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Guwahati, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi and Shillong.
There will be bank holiday in many states of the country on the occasion of Dussehra and Vijayadashami on 20th October. Banks are likely to remain closed on this day in many states including Uttar Pradesh. However, the list of holidays may vary from state to state, so it will be important to check the local holiday list.
Bank branches in Agartala, Bengaluru, Gangtok, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram will remain closed on October 21 due to festivals related to Vijayadashami, Durga Puja and Dasain.
Apart from this, local holidays may be applicable on this day in some other states also.
Bank branches in Gangtok will remain closed on October 22 and 23 due to Durga Puja-Dasain celebrations. In such a situation, Sikkim customers should plan their banking operations in advance.
At the same time, on October 26, there will be a bank holiday in Agartala, Chandigarh, Jammu, Shimla and Srinagar due to occasions like Lakshmi Puja, Accession Day and Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti.
After this, banks will remain closed in Shimla on 29th October on the occasion of Karva Chauth.
Banks will remain closed in Ahmedabad on the last day of the month, October 31, on the occasion of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Jayanti. Therefore local customers should confirm holidays before visiting the branch.
At the same time, there will be bank holidays mainly in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on 2 October, 10 October, 20 October and 24 October. However, changes are possible depending on local conditions and regional announcements.
West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Sikkim and other eastern and north-eastern states will see additional holidays due to Durga Puja and related festivals.
The closure of bank branches does not mean that all banking services will stop. Digital and online services will remain available normally even during holidays.
Payment can be made through UPI platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. Mobile banking and net banking services will also continue. Apart from this, online fund transfer facility will be available through IMPS, NEFT and RTGS. Cash can be withdrawn from ATMs and cash deposit machines can also be used where the facility is available.
