Difference in toilet cleaning methods in India and Europe

Use of cold and paper in Europe

Many areas of Europe experience cold for most of the year. In the past, when tap water in homes was very cold and there was no hot water system, it was difficult to use cold water after defecation. Due to this situation, paper began to be used as a dry substitute. In contrast, India is a tropical country, where access to water is more convenient.

Water abundance and industrial development

Due to abundance of rivers and water sources in India, use of water in daily activities has been natural. On the other hand, the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century in Europe made paper making cheaper and easier. As a result, toilet paper was adopted as a modern sanitation tool.

Plumbing and bathroom structure

Homes and sewer pipelines in Europe are designed in such a way that toilet paper easily dissolves in water and is flushed away. There is no water drain in their bathroom, due to which the bathroom always remains dry. In contrast, Indian bathrooms have complete systems for flowing and draining water.

Hygiene and Cultural Perspective

In Indian culture, washing with water is considered a symbol of complete cleanliness and purity. Whereas in western countries, for a long time there was a belief that dryness protects from bacteria. However, now the use of 'bidet' or jet spray is increasing rapidly in western countries, as doctors also consider cleaning with water to be better for skin and health.
