Amer Fort, built on the Aravalli hills, about 11 kilometers from Jaipur, is one of the most magnificent symbols of the royal heritage of Rajasthan. It is also called Amer Fort or Amber Fort. It was once the capital of the Kachwaha rulers of Amer and the principal residence of the royal family. Today it is a major attraction for tourists visiting Rajasthan and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Group of Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
Raja Mansingh had started the construction
The construction of the present form of Amer Palace started in 1592 during the reign of Raja Mansingh I. Later rulers continuously expanded and built it. According to Rajasthan Tourism, Amer was once the main stronghold of the Kachwaha rulers. Later the capital was shifted to the city of Jaipur situated in the plains.
The architectural style of the fort is one of its greatest features. A beautiful combination of Rajput and Mughal architecture is visible here. The use of white marble along with yellow and pink sandstone gives a grand look to the palace.
The palace is divided into four big parts
The huge complex of Amer Fort is divided into four main parts and each part has a separate courtyard. There are major gates for entry like Suraj Pol and Chand Pol. After this comes Jalaib Chowk, which is one of the important courtyards of the fort. In ancient times, activities of armies returning from war used to take place here.
The palace complex houses the Diwan-i-Aam, royal residence, zenana, temples, gardens and many other historical structures.
Sheesh Mahal is the most special attraction
Amer Fort is also known for its famous Sheesh Mahal. The small mirrors on the walls and roofs of the palace sparkle when the light falls on them. Apart from this, the architectural arrangement of Sukh Niwas also attracts the attention of tourists. Here arrangements were made to maintain coolness inside the palace by using water.
The Aravalli hills surrounding the fort and the Mawatha lake visible in front further enhance its beauty.
Jaigarh's tunnels are connected to Amer
Another specialty of Amer Fort is its underground passages. According to Rajasthan Tourism, some tunnels connect Amer and Jaigarh forts. Some parts of these tunnels have been preserved and opened for tourists.
Jaigarh Fort is located above Amer and has historically been an important part of Amer's defense system.
Unique confluence of history and architecture
Amer Fort is not just a strong fort, but a huge complex of palaces, temples, gardens and royal residences. The architecture of that period is visible in its walls, carvings, arches and mirror work.
Today Amer Fort is an important part of the historical identity of Jaipur. Tourists coming here can see the Rajput period architecture, royal lifestyle and natural scenes of Aravalli together. The light and sound show organized in the evening also presents the history and local heritage of the fort in the form of a story.
