Simple Ways to Clean Shower and Hand Jet at Home

Shower and hand jet cleaning tips

If you have hard water in your home and the water flow from the shower or hand jet is low, the problem may be caused by the accumulation of calcium, magnesium and other dirt. The minerals present in the water gradually accumulate in the small holes of the shower, reducing the flow of water. In such a situation, many people think of calling a plumber, but in some cases, you can also clean the shower and hand jet yourself. Vinegar, brush and some household ingredients can be used for this. Let us know simple ways to remove blockage of shower and hand jet.

1. Use Lemon and ENO

Lemon juice is an effective solution to remove dirt accumulated in shower holes. The acid in lemons can help loosen some mineral deposits.

Cleaning Process:

  • Take lemon juice in a vessel and add some water to it.

  • Open the shower head and soak in the mixture, if the manufacturer's instructions allow it.

  • After about 20 to 30 minutes, clean the pores with a soft brush.

  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water and reinstall the shower.

Before using ENO, it is better to use lemon juice or vinegar alone to avoid unnecessary chemical mixing.

2. Remove Frozen Minerals with White Vinegar

White vinegar is an effective home remedy for cleaning shower heads. Its acidic nature helps to loosen some of the minerals deposited in the water.

Cleaning Method:

  • Open the shower head if possible.

  • Mix equal amounts of white vinegar and water in a vessel.

  • Keep the shower head in this mixture for about 30 minutes.

  • After this, clean the holes with an old soft toothbrush.

  • Finally wash thoroughly with clean water.

If the shower head doesn't come off easily, you can fill a plastic bag with the vinegar-water mixture and tie it around the shower head. Note that vinegar can damage chrome plating, natural stone or certain special finishes. So check the manufacturer's instructions first and avoid prolonged soaking.

3. Cleaning hand jets with salt and vinegar

Mineral or dirt deposits in the hand jet's holes can result in a weak stream of water. In such a situation, first check the nozzle and if necessary, clean it with a thin solution of vinegar.

What to do:

  • If possible to open the hand jet, do so according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Soak the nozzle in the vinegar-water mixture for a short time.

  • Clean the pores with a soft brush.

  • After washing thoroughly with clean water, reapply it and test by running water.

It is not necessary to add salt. Salt particles can scratch the surface or increase deposits in certain areas. So if the vinegar and water mixture is not enough, use a cleaner recommended by the manufacturer.

Things to keep in mind when cleaning the shower

  • Do not clean the metal nozzle by applying force with a needle or sharp object.

  • Do not mix bleach, toilet cleaner or other chemicals with vinegar or ENO.

  • After cleaning, flush the shower thoroughly with clean water.

  • If the water pressure is still low, there may be a problem with the pipes, filter, valve, or water supply.

  • If a hand jet or shower is leaking or a pipe blockage is suspected, seek help from a plumber.
