Effective ways to forget old memories

Effects of old memories and ways to deal with them

There are many such incidents in life which are not easy to forget. Sometimes the pain given by a loved one, sometimes betrayal in relationships, sometimes insult, or some mistake of the past, which is remembered again and again. Many times, even when everything is fine, old memories surround us. When you sit alone, these memories start wandering in your mind and gradually affect your mental peace.

Can we get rid of old and negative memories? The answer is- yes. Although it is not possible to completely erase memories, the pain and emotional impact associated with them can be reduced.

1. Learn to accept the past

The first step is to accept that what has happened cannot be changed. By repeatedly thinking that you wish this had not happened, you can remain stuck in the same pain. Accepting your past does not mean that you accept that event as true, but it does mean that you do not want to let it dominate your present.

2. Don't be alone

When you are alone, old things can bother you more. In such a situation, spend time with family, friends or a trusted person. Share your feelings with someone who can listen to you without judging.

3. Stop repeating old memories

Many times we think about some incident again and again. Thinking about why the other person did this or what we should have said at that time does not solve the problem. When you feel like this, turn your attention to something else.

4. Keep yourself busy

Old memories can be more disturbing in free time. Therefore, include such tasks in your daily routine in which you are interested. Taking a morning walk, reading a book, listening to music, cooking or learning a new skill can give a positive direction to your mind.

5. Learn to forgive yourself

Sometimes old memories also trouble you because of your mistakes. The person keeps wondering why he took such a decision at that time. Remember that you took the decision as per your understanding and circumstances at that time. Learn from your mistakes and give yourself the opportunity to move forward.

6. Incorporate meditation and yoga

Practice meditation and deep breathing for some time every day. This can help in understanding thoughts and handling emotions. Initially, sit in a quiet place for 10 to 15 minutes and concentrate on your breathing. When thoughts come, instead of fighting them, slowly bring your attention back to your breathing.

7. Take help from a psychologist

If old memories repeatedly bother you, affect sleep, cause anxiety or make it difficult to perform everyday tasks, consult a psychologist or mental health professional. With the help of counseling and therapy, one can learn how to understand and deal with these feelings.

Remember, it is not necessary to erase the past, it is necessary to come out of it.

It is not possible to forget every incident that happens in life. Some memories always remain with us, but it does not mean that we live our entire life with their support or burden. Give yourself time, understand your feelings and slowly start paying attention to the present.

Your past is a part of your life, not your whole life. It is not in your hands to change the past, but it is definitely in your hands to make today better.
