Diwali festival and effect on health
The festival of Diwali is being celebrated with great pomp today, in which various types of dishes are prepared in homes and firecrackers are burnt. However, burning of firecrackers degrades air quality in Delhi-NCR, which can have a negative impact on health. The smoke emitted from firecrackers contains harmful particles like PM 2.5 and PM10, which are dangerous for the lungs and heart.
Precautions for lung patients
People suffering from heart and lung problems require special attention. We discussed this topic with Dr. Nikhil Modi, Senior Consultant, Respiratory Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi.
How should lung patients take care of themselves?
Firecrackers during Diwali contain many harmful gases, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. These gases can be inhaled and cause cough, scratchy throat, and difficulty breathing. Smoke from firecrackers can have serious effects on health. – Dr Nikhil Modi
Keep these things in mind
- Those who have difficulty breathing should not forget to take their medicines.
- Such people should not leave the house.
- If it is necessary to go out, wear an N-95 mask, which filters 90% of harmful gases.
- Include enough water in your diet so that the mucus does not become thick.
Effect of Diwali firecrackers on heart
Doctor Nikhil said that firecrackers do not have a direct effect on the heart, but the microscopic particles of air pollution reach the lungs and mix with the blood stream. It does not have an immediate effect on heart patients, but it can be harmful in the future.
He also said that one should stay away from firecrackers with loud bangs as they cause noise pollution. Hearing loud noises causes stress in the body, which can increase the heartbeat.
avoiding sweets
Sweets and fried foods should be avoided on Diwali, as they can increase cholesterol. Instead, eat fruits, vegetables, and coconut water. Include antioxidant and fiber rich foods in your diet.
