Citizens living illegally will go back, Foreign Ministry expressed hope of cooperation from Bangladesh government

New Delhi, 7 May. India has reiterated its strong stand on the issue of return of illegally staying Bangladeshi citizens, Indus Water Treaty (IWT) and terrorism, saying that all foreign nationals living illegally in India will be deported as per law and bilateral agreements. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal presented the government’s opinion on many issues related to the country in the weekly press conference on Thursday.

It is noteworthy that after the bumper victory of BJP in West Bengal, the comments of two ministers of Bangladesh are in discussion, in which there is a possibility of sending illegal immigrants back across the border, so it is hoped that India will not do so. While Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed expressed fear of pushback, Foreign Minister Khalilpur Rahman said in response to a question that if people are forcibly sent to our side, action will be taken.

On the question asked regarding these comments, Randhir Jaiswal clarified India’s policy. He said, ‘Such comments need to be understood as a background. The main issue is the return of illegal people from here. Obviously, this requires the cooperation of Bangladesh. Bangladesh has a backlog of more than 2,860 citizenship verification cases, and many of these cases have been pending for more than five years. Our policy is that whoever is living illegally will have to leave from here. We hope that Bangladesh will conduct national verification so that people living illegally can be deported.

At the same time, in response to a question regarding IWT i.e. Indus Water Treaty, Jaiswal said, ‘Our stand on Indus Water Treaty has always been the same. The IWT has been put on hold for the time being in response to Pakistan’s promotion of cross-border terrorism. Pakistan should completely and forever give up its support for cross-border terrorism.

Jaiswal also said that terrorism has long been a part of Pakistan’s state policy and India has every right to ensure its security. Last year, late night on 7th May, India had launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ against Pakistan. On its first anniversary, the government said the entire world had seen the seriousness of the Pahalgam terror attack and India had given a befitting reply to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

He said, ‘The country will continue to work to strengthen the fight against terrorism at the global level. We believe that only strict and decisive action against terrorism can ensure peace and stability in the region.
