Claim from Bihar to Bengal, PM Modi had already predicted victory
New Delhi: What once seemed like a bold political statement is now being echoed loudly in the latest voting trends. Months after predicting a wave from Bihar to Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now seeing that claim turn into reality. As the counting of votes is progressing in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, early trends are showing that the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading rapidly.
He is leading on more than half the seats in the 294-seat assembly. The ruling party All India Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is lagging behind. Which is completely different from the earlier predictions in which a tough contest was expected.
BJP wave in Bengal
During his hour-long victory speech at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, PM Modi used a geographical analogy to explain the political wave spreading in the eastern region."The river Ganga passes through Bihar to Bengal and the victory in Bihar, just like that river, has cleared the way for our victory in Bengal." The Prime Minister had said. At the time of that speech, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, including spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, This prediction was completely rejected. Ghosh had argued that the political equations of Bihar are different and will not have any impact on Bengal. He had confidently predicted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would remain in power with more than 250 seats.
This election was always an opportunity for BJP to do something new. The party has never formed a government in Bengal. Nevertheless, vigorous election campaign, accurate message and efforts to increase its support base may have turned this electoral environment in favor of BJP. On the contrary, Trinamool Congress had completely rejected the comparison made with Bihar. Party leaders had stressed that the political scenario of Bengal is completely different and predicted Mamata Banerjee’s easy return to power. He even claimed to have won more seats than the majority mark.
Current election trends
As the counting of votes is progressing today, the figures are showing a completely different picture from TMC’s initial estimates.
As per current trends:
BJP: ahead on 200 seats
TMC: Ahead on 87 seats
Total Assembly seats: 294
These figures mark a historic surge for the BJP in a state where the party traditionally had to struggle to get a majority in the assembly. The Prime Minister recently reiterated his stand that his responsibility lies with the state. "to serve, protect and preserve" Is. He also alleged that the ruling party has deviated from its original vision of development.
