Kolkata. West Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari has made a big claim regarding the murder of his former aide Chandranath Rath. He said that around Rs 2 crore was spent for Rath's murder and this amount was allegedly passed on to the shooters. The officer has alleged the involvement of 'Bhaipo gang' behind this. However, these allegations have not been independently confirmed and the case is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Shubhendu Adhikari gave this statement during the nomination of Chandranath Rath's mother Hasirani Rath for the Nandigram assembly by-election. He claimed that according to the information he received, a contract worth Rs 2 crore was given for the murder.
The officer mentioned 'Bhaipo gang', but did not name any person directly in his statement. In the political context, this term has been used for Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee and his associates.
Seven accused arrested, CBI is investigating
According to the officer, seven accused, including the shooters and those allegedly involved in the murder conspiracy, have been arrested in the case. He said that due to inter-state aspect coming to light, the investigation has been handed over to CBI.
According to the available investigation information, further legal process is going on against the accused in the CBI action, but in the information revealed by the investigating agency, no direct connection of these accused with Trinamool Congress has been established.
He was shot dead on May 6.
Chandranath Rath was murdered on 6 May 2026. He was traveling in a vehicle when assailants riding a motorcycle fired at him. He died in the attack, while the driver of the vehicle was also injured. After initial investigation, the case was handed over to CBI.

Shubhendu Adhikari claimed that the people who delivered the money to the shooters were associated with Diamond Harbour. He also said that he has heard the call records related to this. However, this claim and the alleged payment of Rs 2 crore for the murder has not yet been independently confirmed at the investigation stage.
Since the case is under investigation and judicial process, the final conclusion on the murder conspiracy, the alleged amount and the role of the people behind it will be clear only after the action of the investigating agency and the court.
