CM Vijay played a big game by giving one Rajya Sabha seat to Congress in Tamil Nadu, keeping an eye on Lok Sabha elections in 2029
New Delhi: By-election for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu will be held on June 18, 2026. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s party TVK could have easily won this seat by fielding its candidate. This newly formed party does not have any representation in any house of the Parliament, but instead of giving its own party’s candidate, CM Vijay has left this seat for the ally Congress party, so it is thinking far ahead.

This is being presented in the political circles by the Congress Party as the generosity of Tamil Nadu CM Vijay. But C Joseph Vijay is no longer such a raw player in the state politics. Let us tell you that the candidate who will go to Rajya Sabha on Congress Party ticket, his tenure will be only for two years. Meaning, by guaranteeing Congress one seat in Rajya Sabha for two years, CM Vijay has already raised his hand for coordination on seats in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Tamil Nadu has a total of 39 Lok Sabha seats, which is the highest after Maharashtra, West Bengal and Bihar.
Meaning, Thalapathy C Joseph Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) will continue to have the political clout to claim maximum seats from its allies in the Lok Sabha elections.
Vijay government with the support of Congress and allies
Tamil Nadu CM C Joseph Vijay knows that his government does not have majority in the Assembly on its own. Congress is the biggest party supporting his TVK party, which has 5 MLAs. The Congress is also behind other DMK alliance partners, such as the Muslim League and CPM-CPI, which are supporting the TVK government and all these parties are also partners in the Indi Alliance led by it at the national level. It is because of Congress that these parties have also taken up with the main opposition party of Tamil Nadu, DMK for this.
