Commonwealth Games 2026: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu created history, won gold medal for the third consecutive time

Glasgow, 26 July. Indian weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu created history on Sunday, the fourth day of the Commonwealth Games 2026, when she won the gold medal for the third consecutive time in these Games. During the 48 kg weight category competition, he not only created a new Commonwealth Games record in snatch but also achieved the golden achievement by lifting a total weight of 190 kg.

Raja Muthupandi and Rishikant Singh won silver medals

In fact, in the weightlifting event today India won a total of three medals including one silver and two silver. Before Mirabai’s golden success, Hrishikant Singh won the silver medal in the men’s 60 kg category during the day, while in the late evening Raja Muthupandi, making his debut memorable, won the silver medal in the men’s 65 kg category.

Muthupandi lifted a total weight of 286 kg in 65 kg category.

Muthupandi lifted 126 kg in snatch and 160 kg in clean and jerk, taking his total weight to 286 kg. Malaysia’s Muhammad Ajnil bin Bidin won the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record total lift of 299 kg while Papua New Guinea’s Moriah Baru won the bronze medal with a total lift of 282 kg.

India is at eighth place in the table with four medals

If we look at the medal table, India was in eighth position with one gold, two silver and one bronze i.e. a total of four medals in the competitions that continued till late evening on the fourth day. Whereas leading Australia is far ahead of other rivals with maximum 36 medals (15-9-12). England are in second place with 18 medals (4-8-6) while third-placed Scotland have won six medals (4-2-0).

Chanu wins fourth consecutive medal in Commonwealth Games

Talking about 31-year-old Mirabai Chanu, this is her fourth consecutive medal in the Commonwealth Games. He won a silver medal for the first time in the 2014 Games and then won gold medals in 2018, 2022 and now 2026. Chanu lifted a total of 190 kg in snatch and clean and jerk.

Mirabai’s victory was also explosive because she lifted 22 kg more weight than second placed Nigerian Ruth Nyong’o. Chanu created a new Commonwealth Games record by lifting 85 kg in the snatch round. After that he lifted 105 kg weight in the clean and jerk round.

Indian weightlifter picks up pace after nervous start

However, Mirabai had a bit of a nervous start and was not successful in her initial snatch attempt of 82 kg. But true to form of a champion, he soon regained his rhythm and showed the courage and class that has defined his illustrious career.

Even in the clean and jerk, Mirabai faced some uncertainty as she could not complete her initial attempt. However, the Olympic medalist responded like a champ and easily lifted the same 105 kg weight in her second attempt. Having already won the match, Mirabai decided not to take unnecessary risks and did not make her third attempt as the Asian Games would be held in less than two months.
