According to the company’s CEO Goh Miah Kiat, the sea routes have become unsafe due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Ships are having to take longer routes, due to which shipping costs have increased significantly and deliveries are being delayed. There has also been a situation of stock out in many countries, due to which the demand has suddenly increased.
The impact of this war is not limited only to transport, but has also affected the raw materials used in making condoms. There has been a surge in the prices of petrochemical products, making essential materials like synthetic rubber, nitrile and silicone oil expensive. The price of silicone oil has increased by about 30%, while the price of nitrile latex has almost doubled. At the same time, the price of natural rubber has also increased by about 33%. Aluminum foil used in packaging has also become expensive, increasing the overall production cost.
It is noteworthy that Karex Berhad produces about 5 billion condoms every year. Apart from its own brands, this company also supplies to world famous brands like Durex and Trojan. In such a situation, it is clear that in the coming time, no matter which brand is purchased, the prices of condoms may increase by 20 to 30 percent. The company has also indicated that if the situation continues like this, prices may increase further in future.
