Cong Cancels Rahul Gandhi’s Bengal Visit, Says Permission Not Granted

Kolkata: The state-level feud between the Congress and Trinamool Congress came to forefront on Tuesday after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled visit to Kolkata for April 23 was cancelled and his party blamed the TMC.

It alleged that the local administration had not granted permission for the visit. According to the Congress, the party waited until 6pm on Tuesday. But as permission was not granted, it his visit had to be called off, reported Hindustan Times.

However, Gandhi, being keen on undertaking a visit to Bengal, a fresh request for permission will be submitted for either April 25 or 26,  ANI reported.

TMC minister Shashi Panja reacted to this development. She claimed that applications for public meetings need to be sent through a Suvidha Portal “2 to 7 days before the public meeting”.

“This rule applies to all public meetings. All political parties need to take permission like this,” she said, as quoted by HT.

She said TMC government was in caretaker capacity due to the MCC before polls. She said the Election Commission could answer about the permission.

The Congress and TMC have coordinated as Opposition parties against the BJP-led NDA at the Centre. But in Bengal they remain at loggerheads. The Congress is contesting alone in the West Bengal assembly elections for 2026.
