Strictness before the first phase of Bengal elections, ban on riding bikes at night and 96 hours dry day implemented

Before the first phase of assembly elections to be held in West Bengal on April 23, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken strict steps and banned riding bikes at night. The Commission has taken this decision with the aim of ensuring free, fair and peaceful voting.

According to the order issued, there will be a ban on riding bikes from 6 pm to 6 am during the election period. However, exemptions are granted for medical emergencies, family needs or other valid reasons. In such cases, the person concerned will have to take permission from the local police station and give proper reason.

The Commission has also banned pillion riding (sitting on the back of a bike). Even in the morning, pillion riding is allowed only in cases of medical emergency or transportation of school children. The Election Commission believes that this step is necessary in view of the possibility of intimidating or influencing voters through bike rallies.

Let us tell you that in the first phase, voting is to be held on 152 out of 194 assembly seats in the state. According to the Election Commission, special surveillance is being maintained in sensitive areas to prevent any kind of disturbance. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has earlier also said that the Commission will take all possible steps to ensure fair elections. In this sequence, a strict ban has also been imposed on the sale of liquor.

All liquor shops have been closed 96 hours before voting across the state. Under this, serving of liquor in clubs, pubs and hotels has also been banned. Due to the suddenly declared ‘dry day’, a state of confusion was seen among many people.

Some people have raised questions as to why restrictions were imposed across the state when voting was to be held only in a few districts. On this, sources from the concerned department say that alcohol can be used to influence voters during elections, hence this blanket ban has been implemented as a precaution.
