New Delhi: The ongoing political strife over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of electoral rolls by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar got murkier on Monday with the Keralam unit of the Congress calling for the resignation of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant.
The post (now deleted) by the Congress provided ammunition to the BJP to strike out in this no holds barred battle ahead of crucial elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and other states.
On Monday, CJI Kant, in response to reporters queries had said that protests on the streets are law and order issues that do not fall under the Supreme Court’s domain.
In response to this, the Keralam unit of the Congress posted: “Dear Surya Kant, if law and order is not your domain, resign now. We will find your replacement who can handle it.”
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari reacted and posted: “Anarchist Congress! This is a big insult to Constitution of India! Congress is threatening Chief Justice of India! Congress thinks Gandhi Vadra Parivar is above the Constitution! Congress hates Indian democracy & independent Constitution bodies!”
“After the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Chief Election Commissioner, now Maharaja @RahuGandhi ji has demanded the resignation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court as well. According to sources, after this resignation, Rahul Gandhi ji will become Prime Minister, Sharjeel Imam President, Abhijeet Deepke Vice President, Priyanka Gandhi ji Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and Khalistani Pannu Chief Election Commissioner. Soros will be India’s ambassador in America,” BJP MP Nishikant Dubey posted.
BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi told ANI: “Anarchist Congress, who is hell-bent upon creating ruckus on the streets of the country, has stooped so low that is unprecedented in the political history of India… Today, another condemnable statement has come from Kerala Congress when, on their X post, they have used a dastardly statement saying that if law and order is your domain, then leave your post; we will make another arrangement. This shows that a state unit of the Congress party, that too in the state of Kerala, in which they are having a coalition government with the Muslim League—how can they say that they can decide the new Chief Justice and that they want the resignation of the Chief Justice? Now the true face of the Muslim League, Maoist Congress, and their ‘Dimagi Naxal’ mindset has come in the open…”
In a damage control effort, MP and party spokesperson Pawan Khera said the Congress “disagrees” with the statement, calling it “completely incorrect.”
“We completely disagree with this position, whoever has done it. It is completely incorrect. We have absolute faith in the judiciary of this country and respect the highest court. That is exactly why we approached the highest court, as we have full confidence in the judiciary,” Khera told ANI.
