After the death of actor Nana Patekar, the discussion regarding cardiac arrest and sudden death has once again intensified. Actually, Nana Patekar’s health started deteriorating from 2:30 in the night and he reached the hospital between 4:20 to 4:30. On this, the doctor says that in cases of sudden death, doctors say that in case of cardiac arrest, the first few minutes are very important. By giving proper CPR in time and taking the patient to the hospital, the chances of saving life can increase.
Former President of IMA Noida, Dr. NK Sharma easily explained about cardiac arrest. He told that there is an electrical system in our heart, which controls the heartbeats. When the heartbeat suddenly becomes very uncontrolled or becomes much lower than normal, cardiac arrest can occur. In this, the pumping of the heart suddenly stops and blood circulation in the body stops.
What increases the risk of cardiac arrest?
According to Dr. NK Sharma, due to stoppage of blood circulation, the supply of oxygen to the body and especially the brain stops. The patient may suddenly become unconscious and may die if timely treatment is not received. He said that the risk of cardiac arrest can increase due to factors like obesity, pre-existing heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
He told that in case of cardiac arrest, it is very important to give CPR immediately. The purpose of CPR is to somehow maintain the pumping of the heart, so that blood and oxygen continue to reach the body and brain for some time and the patient can be taken to the hospital. However, CPR must be performed with correct technique. Pressing the chest in the wrong way can cause problems like injury or fracture of ribs.
What is the difference between heart attack and cardiac arrest?
Dr. NK Sharma said that heart attack and cardiac arrest are not the same conditions. In a heart attack, the blood supply is usually disrupted due to blockage or blood clot in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. In this, the patient may complain of chest pain, shortness of breath and there is a possibility of cure if immediate medical attention is provided.
At the same time, in cardiac arrest, the electrical activity and pumping of the heart may stop suddenly. Due to this, blood circulation stops and the patient can become unconscious rapidly. In such a situation, immediate CPR and emergency treatment becomes very important.
What things to keep in mind
The doctor said that to avoid serious heart related conditions, people should pay attention to their lifestyle. Caution in eating habits, regular exercise and yoga, prevention of obesity and reducing stress are important. He advised to stay away from junk food and fast food.
He said that stress in today’s busy life is also affecting people’s health. Many times the symptoms of heart attack are not obvious in diabetic patients and it is called silent heart attack. Therefore, it is very important to have regular health checkups and be aware of the changes taking place in the body.
