CPL 2026: Rovman Powell smashes gigantic six straight onto the roof against Guyana Amazon Warriors

Barbados fans witnessed a high-scoring encounter in Qualifier 2 of the CPL 2026 between Jamaica Kingsmen and Guyana Amazon Warriors on Friday. Jamaica won the game by five wickets with two balls to spare. They will now meet Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the final to be played on Sunday.

All-rounder Rovman Powell scored 40 off 17 balls and was named the Player of the Match for his efforts. Needing 48 runs from four overs, Powell was on strike against left-arm spinner Kharry Pierre.

The spinner dropped it short, and the West Indian batter rocked onto his back foot and played a ferocious pull shot. It revived memories of Heinrich Klaasen’s assault on Axar Patel’s bowling in the 2024 T20 World Cup final.

In the same over, the KKR star hit Pierre for another six over the long-off region. In the next over, the 33-year-old hit Imran Tahir for a six that the fielder initially caught, but when the decision was reviewed, it was seen that the fielder had made contact with the boundary cushions. There was no stopping Powell as he hit Shamar Joseph for a boundary and one huge six in the 19th over.

With six needed off the final over, Jamaica lost Andre Russell for two runs, caught by Shai Hope off Romario Shepherd’s bowling. With four runs required off four balls, Hassan Khan took two on the next ball to make it two from three. Shepherd bowled a full toss, and Khan hit the ball past mid-on and completed two runs to help his side qualify for the final.

Chasing 207 to win, Kingsmen lost Maaz Sadaqat for 17-ball 41 while fellow opener Kirk McKenzie amassed 34 off just 20 balls. Keacy Carty then kept the run-scoring going with 56 runs off 40 balls, with five fours and three sixes.

Shimron Hetmyer’s century goes in vain

Earlier in the day, Guyana batted first and scored 206 for 4. Hassan ran out Mohammed Haris for nine runs and then took the wicket of Mavendra Dindayal.

Shai Hope accumulated 40 runs from 33 balls and added 96 runs for the third wicket with Shimron Hetmyer in 49 balls. Hetmyer, who has been one of the best batters in the tournament, scored an unbeaten 102 off 45 balls with four boundaries and eight sixes.
