New Delhi: Delhi Police has come into action against misinformation spread on social media after CJP’s protest at Jantar Mantar. On Tuesday, the police sent notices to four big platforms asking them to immediately remove inflammatory and fake content.
Notice to social media platforms
IFSO unit of Delhi Police issued official notices to Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube. It said thousands of fake posts, doctored videos and deepfake content went viral on these platforms during the CJP protests. According to the police, this material spread misinformation and spoiled the atmosphere.
In the notice, instructions have been given to immediately remove the identified posts and videos. Officials said that some news portals have also been found involved in spreading this misinformation. Police are investigating complaints received from different places and work is going on on several cases of fake news related to the protest.
CJP’s movement and agreement with the government
This development has come a few days after CJP ended its 36-day agitation on Saturday, July 25. The movement ended when Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned. The central government had accepted the main demands of CJP.
These included Pradhan’s resignation, withdrawal of FIR against the protesters, assurance of not taking retaliatory action and major reforms in the examination system. The government had also agreed to give a written draft of the agreement after legal advice.
Interim relief from SC, new warning from CJP
The Supreme Court on Tuesday gave interim relief to the students. The Court directed states to release detained students who are below 18 years of age and without criminal records.
Also ordered not to take any harsh action in the FIR related to CJP’s demonstration at Jantar Mantar and other places. But CJP has again warned today. The party says that if the government does not fulfill its promise of withdrawing the FIR and not taking punitive action, then the nationwide movement will start again.
The CJP alleged that the SC’s interim order could be used to continue the case against the students. After a late night meeting with the government on Monday, the party had clearly said that a written assurance is required that there will be no new FIR. Police are now keeping an eye on social media so that no new rumor or inflammatory video goes viral in the name of the movement.
