Iran on Tuesday warned that vessels belonging to any country or company accepting compensation from Tehran’s frozen assets would not be allowed to transit the Strait of Hormuz, according to the country’s state broadcaster IRIB.
Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters issued the warning while rejecting US President Donald Trump’s statement that Iranian funds under American control would be used to compensate ships damaged during the recent Gulf conflict.
A spokesperson for the Iranian military command said Tehran believed the damage to vessels was caused by insecurity created by US military actions and the use of what Iran described as an illegal and unsafe shipping route south of the Strait of Hormuz.
The spokesperson said Iran’s armed forces would prevent ships of any country or company that accepts such compensation from passing through the strategic waterway.
Trump had said on Monday that Iranian funds controlled by Washington would be used to pay compensation for damage caused to ships in the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he said the United States would not use its own funds for the payments.
“We’re going to use Iran’s money to pay for the damage they did,” Trump said, adding that Iranian funds under US control would be used for compensation.
The US President did not provide details on the amount of Iranian assets under Washington’s control, the companies eligible for compensation or the mechanism for distributing payments.
Trump also said conditions in the Strait of Hormuz had improved following US military operations against Iran and claimed that talks between Washington and Tehran were underway.
He said Iran had sought a pause in hostilities as negotiations continued, while warning that military action could resume if no agreement was reached.
