CSMIA’s global sting! The country’s leading airport has been awarded the prestigious ‘Platinum Rating’ in waste management

  • CSMIA awarded with ‘Zero Waste to Landfill Platinum Rating’
  • More than 99 percent of waste is successfully recycled
  • ACA Level 5 Carbon Certification

Mumbai’s CSMIA gets Zero Waste : Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), operated by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), has been awarded the prestigious Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) Platinum – Class 1 rating by CII (Confederation of Indian Industry). With this milestone CSMIA now joins the ranks of airports in India handling more than 50 million passengers a year and achieving this certification. The rating demonstrates the airport’s commitment to sustainable waste management, where more than 99 percent of waste is treated without sending it to dumping grounds through the airport’s comprehensive and integrated systems.

Apply best waste management practices

The ZWL assessment has proven that CSMIA has implemented best waste management practices through waste segregation, recycling and recovery systems. It has successfully diverted major waste streams such as plastic waste, wet and dry waste, as well as other recyclables from going to landfills. This assessment in FY 2025-26 is in line with ZWL’s objective of minimizing waste generation and maximizing waste treatment. Primary sources of airport waste include food, plastic, paper and operational waste.

Well organized infrastructure support

CSMIA has implemented a proactive and value chain-driven approach based on the ‘5R’ principles (Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle, Recover). This has significantly reduced reliance on dumping grounds and improved waste recovery. This includes segregation of waste at source, recycling, monitoring and continuous reduction of waste, supported by a dedicated environment and sustainability team, as well as well-organized infrastructure for waste collection and transfer to authorized recycling centres.

Also includes ACA Level 5 Carbon Certification

The honor reflects CSMIA’s global sustainability leadership, including ACA Level 5 carbon certification. Over the past year, the airport has accelerated its sustainability plan through key initiatives such as 100 per cent renewable energy use, over 40 per cent improvement in energy efficiency, electrification of the ground vehicle fleet, expansion of energy-efficient technologies and empowerment of ESG governance.
