New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met with Indian medalists who performed exceptionally well at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The athletes shared their journeys and many interesting experiences related to sports with the Prime Minister. PM Modi also encouraged the athletes, saying, “Those who play will flourish.” After the video of the meeting surfaced, many moments of the conversation between the athletes and the Prime Minister are being discussed.
During the meeting, the athletes also chanted “Bharat Mata ki Jai” with PM Modi. The conversation included topics ranging from boxer Lovlina Borgohain’s experience at a Glasgow restaurant to Jadumani Singh’s story of dedicating his victory to the Kargil martyrs and a funny anecdote from Narendra Berwal.

The Prime Minister then smiles and joins the athletes, saying, “Whoever plays will thrive.” He urged everyone to continue cheering for Indian sports. He then joined the athletes in chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai.”
PM Modi praised Lovlina’s ‘map of India’ move.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised boxer Lovlina Borgohain for objecting to the incorrectly displayed map of India at a restaurant in Glasgow.
PM Modi jokingly asked Lovlina, “What happened, she was fighting with the restaurant owner?”

The Indian boxing team had gone to dinner at Mister Singh’s India restaurant in Glasgow. Lovlina objected to an incorrect map of India displayed on the menu. A video of this incident went viral on social media. The Prime Minister described the video as special and said it will be remembered for a long time.
Jadumani Singh dedicated his victory against Pakistan to the Kargil heroes.
Indian Army boxer and silver medalist Jadumani Singh Mandengbam also shared his experience with the Prime Minister. After defeating Pakistan’s Sumama Rahman 5-0 in the 55 kg category in Glasgow, Jadumani dedicated his victory to the Kargil war heroes. Prime Minister Modi later praised his spirit.
PM Modi said that his gesture of dedicating the medal to the Kargil heroes made this victory more special.

Jadumani later won a silver medal in this category. Her story is also special because she faced a significant challenge to secure a place in the 55 kg category after the 50 kg category was discontinued.
PM Modi laughed after hearing Narendra Berwal’s story.
Heavyweight boxer Narendra Berwal told the Prime Minister a funny old story. He recalled a bout against a Pakistani boxer at the 2015 World Military Games, where his opponent said to him after the victory:
“Your name is Narendra, your coach’s name is Narendra, and your Prime Minister’s name is Narendra. I hate the name Narendra.”

Even Prime Minister Modi laughed after hearing this from Narendra Berwal. This incident was related to the 2015 World Military Games, when Berwal defeated a Pakistani boxer.
Mirabai Chanu narrated her emotional journey.
The most emotional moment of the meeting came when weightlifter Mirabai Chanu recalled her difficulties behind winning the gold medal in Glasgow.
Chanu, who won gold in the 48 kg category, said the last few years have been extremely difficult for her. She has dealt with injuries and family problems. She also suffered the disappointment of missing out on a medal at the Paris Olympics.

Mirabai said that she could not hold back her tears when she stood on the podium in Glasgow and saw the tricolor being hoisted and the national anthem being played.
After listening to her, PM Modi said that her tears spoke volumes about the significance of her achievement. He added emotionally that it felt as if each teardrop was a gold medal.
The Prime Minister has previously praised Mirabai’s achievement. In Glasgow, she won her third consecutive Commonwealth Games title by winning gold in the 48 kg category.
India’s impressive performance at CWG 2026:
India won a total of 39 medals at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. These included 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze medals. India finished fourth in the medal tally. Boxing was one of India’s most successful sports.
Indian boxers won a total of 10 medals, including seven gold. Furthermore, Indian athletes also performed well in weightlifting, athletics, para-athletics, and judo.
