India’s Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra said his comeback remains “a work in progress” after winning the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games 2026, admitting he is still some distance away from his peak fitness following a lengthy injury lay-off.
Neeraj, a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist, finished second with a season-best throw of 85.83m, while Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage clinched gold with a Games record throw of 89.75m. India’s Yashvir Singh secured the bronze medal with a personal best of 85.41m, completing a memorable double podium finish for the country.
Reflecting on his performance, Neeraj said he is gradually regaining the rhythm that made him one of the world’s best.
“I can’t say my fitness is back to what it used to be. I’m getting there gradually. Doha was my first competition back, and I wasn’t fully prepared then. I was a little better here, but I’m still trying to regain my rhythm through the upcoming competitions,” he said.
The 28-year-old added that competing after an injury requires caution, even when chasing top honours.
“It’s not really pressure to win gold. The biggest difference is when you’re 100 per cent fit. You have much more fighting spirit. But when you’re coming back from an injury, you have to be careful with every step. Today I was cautious. Sometimes I wanted to throw with full power, and at other times I wanted to stay under control because of the conditions. Despite that, the throw was good,” he said.
Neeraj also pointed to the cold conditions in Glasgow, saying they affected the flight of the javelin.
“I also had only one decent throw today. I felt the other throws could have been better, but the javelin just didn’t fly. I prefer warmer weather… because I have Indian blood,” he said with a smile.
Although pleased to return to the podium, Neeraj stressed that his focus remains on improving with every competition.
“There’s still room to improve. I wouldn’t say I’ve improved a lot this season. The aim now is to keep improving gradually in the next competitions,” he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated both Indian athletes for their achievements.
Praising Neeraj, the Prime Minister wrote, “An outstanding Silver for Neeraj Chopra in the Men’s Javelin event at Glasgow! He has once again demonstrated remarkable consistency, composure and spirit. His successes make every Indian proud.”
He also congratulated Yashvir Singh on winning bronze, saying, “He produced an impressive throw, reflecting his zeal and dedication. His achievement will inspire many young athletes.”
Pathirage’s 89.75m effort proved unbeatable and earned him the Commonwealth title, while Neeraj’s season-best and Yashvir’s personal-best performance ensured India finished with silver and bronze in one of the marquee athletics events of Glasgow 2026.
