Da Nang man arrested in $30,000 larceny from foreign tourist

The Da Nang police have arrested a local man for allegedly agreeing to exchange US$30,000 for a Chinese tourist and fleeing with it.

Da Nang police opened a criminal investigation against Tran Van Quan on Sept. 30 under the charge of “abuse of trust to appropriate property.”

According to investigators, Wang Qiang, 30, had successfully exchanged currencies through Quan several times before.

On Sept. 13, Wang contacted Quan through WeChat to arrange another exchange of U.S. dollars into Chinese yuan.

Quan went to Wang’s residence in An Hai Ward to collect the $30,000. He said he would find someone to exchange the money and transfer the equivalent amount to Wang’s bank account using the QR code Wang provided.

After receiving the money, Quan blocked Wang on WeChat, removed him from his contacts and fled to Nha Trang.

Wang reported the incident to police on Sept. 17.

Da Nang criminal police tracked Quan down in Nha Trang and recovered the $30,000 from his backpack at the time of his arrest.

Police said Quan subsequently admitted to taking the money.

The investigation is continuing.
