Dabur India: Ban on Dabur India products; Many items including honey, ghee included, instructions to stop sale

News Network: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken strict action against Dabur India. The food regulator has directed the company to immediately stop selling food products claiming to be ‘100%’. These include organic apple cider vinegar, organic honey, homemade coconut milk, sesame oil and cow ghee. The company has been asked to submit a report on the action taken within 15 days. According to the FSSAI, Dabur’s claim of ‘100%’ violates the Food Safety and Standards (Advertisement and Claims) Rules, 2018. As these claims are vague, cannot be verified and are likely to mislead the consumers. The regulator said that the company had earlier also been issued notices directing it to stop making such claims. Notices had been issued earlier too FSSAI said that it had earlier issued notices to Dabur and directed it to immediately stop making such misleading 100% claims.

Order to submit action report

In an Instagram post, FSSAI said it has directed Dabur to immediately stop selling all food products with misleading claims of 100% purity and submit an action report within 15 days. Dabur had made claims on its website such as 100% natural, 100% pure, 100% purity guaranteed, 100% organic, 100% fresh coconut water.

FSSAI alleged that the ‘Organic India’ logo was used on Dabur Himalayan Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and Dabur Organic Magha, which is a violation of the Food Safety and Standards (Organic Food) Regulations, 2017. The regulator said that these violations relate to misleading advertising claims and unauthorized use of organic certification.

Dabur begins reforming labels and advertising

Following this action by FSSAI, Dabur India has clarified its side. Dabur has claimed that this matter is not related to the quality or safety of the products but only to the meaning of the words on the packaging. However, as a responsible company, Dabur has informed the stock exchanges (BSE/NSE) that it has initiated the process of removing the ‘100%’ claims marked by FSSAI from its labels, advertisements and websites. For some time now, FSSAI has been taking an aggressive stance in the interest of consumers and curbing misleading advertisements. This action taken against a powerful brand like Dabur is being considered a big lesson for other food manufacturers as well.
