Danger of UV radiation in Kerala, orange alert issued, government advising to stay safe
High levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation have been recorded in Kerala during the last 24 hours. This is a matter of concern. Giving this information on Friday, Kerala State Disaster Management Authority said that the level of ultraviolet radiation has been recorded above eight in Konni of Pathanamthitta, Chengannur of Alappuzha, Changanassery of Kottayam and Munnar of Idukki. Because of this the state government has issued ‘Orange Alert’.
Additionally, 10 places across Kerala recorded levels between six and seven. This level comes under the category of ‘Yellow Alert’. Disaster management said that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause ‘sunburn’ (burning of the skin), skin diseases, effects on the eyes and other health problems.

Government advised people
The State Disaster Management has advised people regarding this. According to the advisory, the highest levels of radiation are usually recorded between 10 am and 3 pm, with people urged to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during this time frame. The advisory also asked people with direct exposure to sunlight and those suffering from skin problems, albinism, eye diseases, cancer and weak immune systems to take extra precautions.
What should people wear when they go out?
The authority advised the public to use protective measures such as hats, umbrellas and sunglasses and wear cotton clothing covering the entire body when going out during the day. The authority further said that ultraviolet ray levels are generally higher in high altitude and tropical areas. Also, it can remain high even on days with clear sky.

Sirens were played in many districts
It said real-time ultraviolet index data obtained from 14 monitoring stations set up by the authority is available online. Meanwhile, in view of rising temperatures in Thrissur and Palakkad districts, the India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning for both the districts. As part of the warning system, sirens were sounded after 12.30 pm on Friday in Thrissur and Palakkad and other districts where temperatures are rising, it said.
