According to preliminary information, the fire started due to an explosion in the air conditioner (AC) located at the rear of the second floor of the building. The incident occurred around 3:30 am, when most people were fast asleep. The flames spread immediately and reached the third floor. When the fire broke out, many residents tried to escape. During the rescue operation, nine charred bodies were recovered from different floors, one from the first floor, five from the second floor and three from the closed stairs. It is feared that these people were trying to escape through the stairs, but due to the lock not being open, they could not escape and were burnt alive. We are still investigating further, but until the DNA test is done, we will not be able to find out the gender of the victims. A total of nine dead bodies have been confirmed. People are citing short circuit as the reason, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet about the exact cause of the incident.
BJP MLA Sanjay Goyal said, “This is a very tragic incident. This incident happened in a building located in Block B of Vivek Vihar. There are eight flats in this building. Due to short circuit, the fire broke out at around 3:45 in the morning and spread to all four floors of the building. Because some people could not open the lock, they lost their lives.
The bodies are being taken to the mortuary of GTB Hospital for identification. Some dead bodies have turned into skeletons. They will be identified through DNA sampling. Police have taken photographs of the dead bodies for identification. Short circuit is being said to be the main reason behind this incident.
