Delhi Garbage Mountains: Rekha Gupta Government of Delhi and Delhi MCD i.e. Delhi Municipal Corporation have geared up to free the country's national capital Delhi from mountains of garbage. MCD has prepared an action plan to eliminate the mountains of garbage at landfill sites. Under this, the waste will be disposed of by dividing it into 3 categories. In this regard, corporation officials said that the waste and garbage present at the three landfill sites have been divided into three categories.
In this, the waste dumped till March 31, 2025 was classified as old waste (legacy waste). Apart from this, the waste after March 31, 2025 has been divided into half old waste category and fresh waste (waste generated every day).
Under the action plan, a review report of the corporation regarding garbage disposal will be prepared every day. In view of this, old waste at all three landfill sites will be processed and disposed through biomining. From April 1, 2025, work is being done continuously through various means to dispose of the waste coming to the landfill site and the fresh waste coming every day. Under this, five plants are being set up under waste management on more than 40 acres of land vacated at landfill sites through bio-mining. Now about 12 thousand metric tons of garbage is being generated from Delhi every day. Out of this, about 8100 metric tons of garbage is being disposed, processed and recycled through power plants and plants under construction and other means. Now the work of developing five new integrated waste processing plants has started.
By the end of this year, the mountain of garbage will end from Bhalswa and Okhla landfill sites.
Standing Committee Chairman of the Corporation, Satya Sharma said that continuous work is being done to eliminate the mountain of garbage present at the three landfill sites. A review in this regard is done every day. Also, the work of waste management is being assessed by preparing review reports every week to eliminate mountains of garbage at landfill sites. It is planned to completely eliminate the mountain of age-old waste and garbage at Bhalswa and Okhla landfill sites by the end of this year. The mountain of garbage at the Ghazipur landfill site is planned to be eliminated by December 2027.
It will cost Rs 596 crore
Modern processed waste disposal facilities with a total capacity of 5900 metric tonnes per day will be developed in five waste disposal centers Bhalswa, Okhla, Singhola, Ghazipur and Narela-Bawana. These projects will cost approximately Rs 596 crore.
So much waste has been disposed of
According to MCD, since 2019 till now, about 178 lakh metric tonnes of old and other waste has been disposed of through bio-mining at the three landfill sites. In the year 2019, there was a total of 280 lakh metric tonnes of waste at the three landfill sites, out of which age-old waste was bio-mined. 80 lakh metric tonnes of waste was present at Bhalswa landfill site, 140 lakh metric tonnes of waste was present at Ghazipur landfill site and 60 lakh metric tonnes of waste was present at Okhla landfill site.
15 lakh metric tons of garbage present
According to the corporation's data, at present there is about 68 lakh metric tons of garbage in Ghazipur and 19 lakh metric tons of garbage in Bhalswa. The old waste has been disposed of in Okhla. About 15 lakh metric tonnes of other waste is currently present at the Okhla landfill site. About 102 lakh metric tonnes of waste present at the three landfill sites will also be disposed of soon through bio-mining and other means and through new plants.
