To deal with the increasing air pollution in Delhi, the government has intensified action at the ground level. District level review meetings were held in East, North-East, South-East and South Delhi under the chairmanship of Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. Officials were directed to identify pollution hotspots, map the sources and submit time-bound corrective action to the concerned agencies.
Pollution sources will be investigated within a radius of 3 kilometers
The district administration will identify pollution hotspots based on the data from AQI monitoring stations. Potential sources such as road dust, traffic jams, vehicle emissions, construction and demolition activities, unauthorized parking, open areas and burning of garbage or biomass will be assessed in each hotspot. Where necessary, activities causing pollution within a three kilometer radius of the hotspot will also be investigated.
Special focus on areas with PM10 and PM2.5
Officials have been asked to inspect areas with high levels of PM10 and PM2.5 on priority basis and take immediate action. Special monitoring will be done especially on areas with heavy traffic, parking of heavy vehicles, excessive road dust and jams. Source-wise action plan will be prepared for each hotspot, clearly specifying the responsible agency, corrective measures and timeline for action.
Pending road works will have to be completed by 31st October
The Delhi government has set a target to complete pending road and civil works wherever possible by October 31. This includes pothole repair, treatment and development of brown areas and other road and roadside works. After completion of the construction work, concerned agencies have been instructed to ensure regular maintenance and control road dust.
Strictness on garbage burning and traffic jams
The government has directed to take strict action against road dust, construction pollution, garbage burning, illegal parking and traffic jams. In projects where essential road works cannot be completed at present, water sprinkling and other dust suppression measures have been asked to continue until the road surface is restored.
