After the collapse of the five-storey PG building in Delhi's Satya Niketan, a PIL has been filed in the Delhi High Court regarding the safety of private PGs, rented flats and private hostels of students. Delhi High Court has sought response on a PIL demanding formation of advisory and monitoring committees to ensure the safety of students in private PGs, rented flats and hostels.
Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Central and Delhi Government and directed them to file an affidavit on the tragic building accident in Satya Niketan area of Delhi.
In the wake of the Satya Niketan building disaster, the Delhi High Court has sought response to a PIL seeking the formation of student housing advisory and monitoring committees at college, university and district levels to ensure the safety of students living in paying guest (PG) accommodation, rented flats and hostels.
The petition said that the Satya Niketan incident has exposed the shortcomings in monitoring and regulation of private student residences. There is a need for better coordination between various government and educational institutions for matters related to the safety of students.
Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia on the petition The division bench has issued notices to MCD, Delhi Police, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, DU, University Grants Commission, JNU, BR Ambedkar University and Pannalal Girdharilal Dayanand College and directed them to file affidavits.
This PIL has been filed by DAV College student Shivvansh Kalia through lawyer Ashu Bidhuri. The next hearing on the case will be held on October 14 along with other petitions related to Satya Niketan.
