Delhi High Court: Delhi High Court has taken a serious stance towards ending the problem of rabies among stray dogs in Delhi and keeping people safe from it. The court has asked the Delhi government to explain how the action plan prepared for prevention and eradication of rabies in stray dogs is being implemented. After this stance of the court, now the government will have to clarify its action plan and the status of its implementation.
Stray dogs are present in large numbers in Delhi
A large number of stray dogs are present on the roads and public places in Delhi. Due to these, people have to face problems in many areas. Incidents of dog bites also keep coming up from time to time. In such cases the risk of rabies becomes a matter of most serious concern. Rabies is a fatal disease and if timely treatment is not received after infection, it can prove fatal. This is the reason why vaccination of stray dogs is considered very important for its prevention.
How effective is the government's plan on the ground?
Now the main question before the High Court is how effectively the plan made for prevention of rabies in Delhi is being implemented on the ground. It is not enough to just prepare a plan, but under it, it is also necessary to implement the steps like identification, vaccination, sterilization and monitoring of stray dogs in a consistent and systematic manner.
Government will have to be informed about the steps being taken
The court has sought information from the Delhi government regarding the implementation of the action plan. The government will have to tell what steps are being taken under the scheme and what arrangements have been made by the administration to reduce the threat of rabies. The government's reply in this matter is expected to clarify at what level the current system is working regarding vaccination and rabies control of stray dogs in the capital.
Not just treatment, control over the source of infection is necessary
According to experts, merely increasing treatment arrangements in hospitals is not enough to effectively control rabies. It is equally important to control the source of infection. For this, along with vaccination, sterilization and monitoring of stray dogs on a large scale, it is also important to increase awareness among the people.
The matter is related to public health
The High Court hearing is also considered important because it is directly related to public health and people's safety. After the reply of the Delhi government, the court can see which areas need improvement in the existing scheme and what steps can be taken to make it more effective.
At present, all eyes are on the response of Delhi government. The further direction of the case will be decided after the government clarifies the status of implementation of the action plan before the court.
