Delhi MCD Mayor Election 2026: New mayor will be elected today

Election of a new mayor is to be held in Delhi today. For this, the process of election of three members of the Standing Committee will also be organized in the meeting of the Corporation House at 2 pm.

New Delhi: The much awaited Mayor Election 2026 of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is being organized today in the capital of India, New Delhi. The victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Pravesh Wahi in this election is considered almost certain. The main reason for this is the boycott of elections by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP having a clear majority.

Election process and possible results

The MCD House meeting will begin at 2 pm, in which the mayor as well as three members of the Standing Committee will be elected. Looking at the current equations, the contest against BJP candidate Parvesh Wahi looks very weak. Congress party has made Mohammad Zarif its candidate, but the party has only 9 votes, which is not enough to win. In such a situation, there is also a possibility that if the Congress candidate withdraws his name, then Pravesh Wahi may be elected unopposed.

The majority figure in MCD is 137, while BJP has a total of 142 votes. Apart from councillors, it also includes Lok Sabha MPs, Rajya Sabha members and nominated MLAs. AAP, on the other hand, has 105 votes, but due to their election boycott the contest has become almost one-sided.

Profile of candidates

Pravesh Wahi has been a three-time councilor and represents Rohini ward. His political journey started from the grassroots level and he has also been active in organizational positions. He is also being considered as the choice of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, which has further strengthened his candidature.

He won the election for the first time in 2007 and then also won in 2012 and 2022. Apart from this, he has also worked on important positions like Construction Committee and Zone Chairman of MCD. He was also the Chairman of the Standing Committee in 2016-17.

Election conduct and administrative role

This time the election process will be presided over by outgoing mayor Raja Iqbal Singh. This is the first time that the sitting mayor will be the presiding officer of the elections. In earlier years, this responsibility was given to different officers. Along with the Mayor, elections will also be held for the post of Deputy Mayor. BJP has made Monica Pant its candidate for this post, while Rajesh Kumar Gupta is in the fray from Congress’s side.
