Delhi Suffers Worst Pre-Diwali Air Quality in 10 Years as AQI Hits 369; Severe Smog Threatens Capital

National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi woke up on Sunday, 8 November 2026, to its most polluted Diwali eve in a decade. A lethal combination of skyrocketing stubble burning, low wind speeds, and widespread violation of firecracker restrictions pushed air quality levels to dangerous extremes across the region.

The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 4:00 PM on Saturday reached 369 (Very Poor) on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) scale—the highest level recorded on the day before Diwali since 2016 (404).

Spike in Particulate Matter & Firecracker Violations

Despite Supreme Court orders restricting firecracker usage to certified “green crackers” within designated two-hour evening windows, pollutant levels spiked dramatically across major monitoring stations:

  • PM2.5 Surge: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) spiked from 177 \mu g/m^3 at 7:45 PM to 289 \mu g/m^3 by 10:00 PM across 55 active monitoring stations.
  • Neighborhood Hotspots: Residential zones saw severe escalations. In Punjabi Bagh, PM2.5 nearly tripled within an hour from 208 to 593 \mu g/m^3, while RK Puram breached 621 \mu g/m^3 by 9:00 PM. Mundka recorded a peak reading of 718 \mu g/m^3.
  • Enforcement Challenges: Delhi Police deployed over 250 special teams across precincts, but officials conceded that verifying green cracker certifications and monitoring scattered urban violations remained humanly impossible.

Stubble Fires & Severe Weather Outlook

Environmental agencies warn that meteorology and regional farm fires are converging to trap pollutants close to the ground:

  1. Escalating Farm Fires: ISRO’s INSAT-3DS satellite detected 415 fire pixels across Punjab and Haryana on Saturday—5.5 times higher than levels recorded on 1 November.
  2. Thermal Inversion & Weak Winds: Calm surface winds after sunset prevented horizontal dispersion, while a thermal inversion layer trapped pollutants below 578 metres.
  3. Severe Forecast for Monday: The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) projects the AQI to deteriorate into the ‘Severe’ category (400+) by 4:00 AM on Monday, 9 November 2026.
