Mathematics of ex-dividend and record date: When will you get dividend on buying shares? Often new investors are confused about which day they should buy shares to get dividends. It is very easy to understand the rules under the T+1 settlement cycle applicable in the Indian stock market: Record Date: This is the cut-off date on which it is mandatory for your name to be registered in the official shareholder register (Demat Account) of the company by the close of the market. Ex-Dividend Date: This is usually the trading day immediately preceding the record date (or the same day in the T+1 system). Right time to buy shares: If you want to get the dividend of a company, then you have to buy that share at least one business day before the ex-dividend date. If you buy shares on or after the ex-date, you will not get the benefit of that declared dividend, rather that profit will go to the old seller's account. Rule for selling shares: If you already hold shares and want to take advantage of the dividend, you can sell the shares anytime on or after the ex-dividend date; Your dividend will be safely credited to your bank account. Tax rules on dividend income (TDS & Income Tax Slabs) Dividend income is taxable under the Income Tax Act, which is important for every investor to understand: Tax as per Income Tax Slab: Dividends paid by companies are now added to the total annual income of the shareholder under 'Income from Other Sources' and the investor has to pay tax as per his applicable individual tax slab (e.g. 5%, 10%, Tax has to be paid as per 20% or 30%. Deduction of 10% TDS: If the total dividend paid by a company to a shareholder in a financial year exceeds ₹5,000, the company deducts a flat 10% TDS on it before crediting the dividend amount. If PAN card is not linked, this TDS 20% can be deducted. Option of Form 15G/15H: If the total annual income of an investor is less than the tax exemption limit, he can submit Form 15G (Form 15H for senior citizens) in advance to the Registrar of Companies to avoid TDS deduction. This trading week of 17th to 21st August is presenting an excellent opportunity for stock market investors to achieve passive cash flow. However, market experts recommend that investors should avoid betting on a stock merely for the lure of dividend pay-outs; The final investment decision should be taken only after a thorough analysis of the company's fundamentals, future growth prospects and valuation.
