DMK’S support crucial for Delimitation Bill
New Delhi: The government today indicated to the media and political circles that the DMK is going to support the Delimitation Bill. However, the Congress-led opposition is denying the government’s claim.
On the other hand, the DMK, having realized its importance in pushing the Bill, is said to be keeping all its options open. The DMK has 22 members in the Lok Sabha and eight in the Rajya Sabha, which is crucial for a Constitutional Amendment on the Delimitation Bill.
Sources said that the DMK is seeking last-minute clarifications on the bill. It does not want the South to lose out and seeks safeguards for Southern states. Senior DMK leader Tiruchi Shiva observed that if the South is going to be hit, then defer the Bill for another 25 years.
Political observers feel that DMK is still playing hide and seek on the Delimitation Bill. About the Women’s quota, DMK is extending support, but wants the Women’s quota on the current Lok Sabha strength.
