Health Desk. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for the absorption of calcium in the body and normal functioning of bones and muscles. Due to its deficiency, the symptoms may be mild in the beginning, hence many times people ignore them considering them as normal fatigue. However, if some symptoms appear continuously then it is advisable to consult a doctor.
1. Constant fatigue and weakness
Feeling tired or weak all the time despite adequate rest may be associated with Vitamin D deficiency. However, there can be many other reasons for this also.
2. Pain in bones
Vitamin D deficiency can affect the absorption of calcium in the body. Due to this, pain or discomfort may be felt especially in the waist, legs or other bones.
3. Muscle weakness
Having more trouble than usual climbing stairs, standing for long periods of time, or doing everyday tasks can be a sign of muscle weakness.
4. Frequent muscle pain or cramps
Some people may experience muscle pain, strain or cramps due to Vitamin D deficiency.
5. Problem of falling ill again and again
Vitamin D plays a role in the normal functioning of the body's immune system. There has been research on the link between deficiency and frequent infections, but frequent illness alone is not a sure sign of vitamin D deficiency.
How to confirm?
Having any of these symptoms does not mean that Vitamin D is definitely low in the body. This is usually confirmed with a 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test. It is not advisable to take high-dose vitamin D supplements without proper testing. The doctor can recommend tests and treatment as per need.
