The court has issued strict directions to the administration and the health department to ensure regular medical checkup of Sonam Wangchuk by a special team of doctors. Why did Delhi High Court have to give this sensitive order?

Sonam Wangchuk and her supporters from Ladakh are continuously holding fasts and peaceful protests for their demands. Due to this long-running fast, concerns were being raised about the continuous decline in his health, after which the matter reached the legal threshold. The division bench of the Delhi High Court, while hearing the petition, made it clear that even though it is the democratic right of the citizens to protest or express disagreement, it is the primary responsibility of the state to protect the lives of the agitators and not allow any compromise with their health.

After this decision of the High Court, now an official team of doctors will check Sonam Wangchuk’s vitals (blood pressure, pulse rate and sugar level) several times a day. The court has directed the concerned authorities to keep the medical reports updated from moment to moment so that in case of deterioration in health, emergency medical care can be provided to them immediately. After this intervention of the court, the administrative bustle regarding security and health facilities at the protest site has intensified.
