Health Desk. It is a common problem to have severe strain and pain in the leg muscles while sleeping or suddenly at night. In common parlance, this is called vein climbing. Sometimes lack of water or some essential electrolytes and nutrients in the body can also be associated with muscle cramps. However, the reason behind this could be excessive exercise, staying in one position for a long time or some health problems.
1. Potassium
Potassium is essential for the normal functioning of muscles and nerves in the body. Due to its deficiency, some people may complain of muscle weakness or cramps.
2. Magnesium
Magnesium plays a role in normal muscle function. Its deficiency is linked to muscle strains and cramps, especially when it is deficient in excess in the body.
3.Calcium
Calcium is important not only for bones but also for muscle contraction. Muscle cramps can occur when calcium levels in the body are too low.
4. Vitamin D
Vitamin D helps in the use of calcium in the body. Its deficiency can cause complaints like muscle weakness and in some cases pain or cramps.
5. Water and Electrolytes
In case of excessive sweating, heat or not drinking enough water, the balance of fluid and electrolytes in the body can get disturbed. This may increase the problem of muscle cramps.
