Dominance of Muslim candidates in Congress’s victory, similar pattern seen in 5 states

New Delhi: In the recent assembly elections, Muslim leaders had a large share among the candidates who won from the Congress party. In Assam, out of 19 seats won by the party, 18 were won by Muslim candidates while in Kerala, 35 Muslim MLAs were elected, most of whom were from the UDF alliance.

The two seats that Congress won in West Bengal were both won by Muslim candidates and in Tamil Nadu also a Muslim candidate was victorious. Congress had given tickets to 63 Muslim candidates. Overall, the success rate of Muslim candidates in Assam and Kerala was around 80 percent. In Assam, Kerala, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, the winning Congress candidates included a large number of Muslim leaders.

Won 18 out of 19 seats in Assam

In Assam, out of 19 seats won by the Congress Party, Muslim candidates won 18 seats. The party had fielded 20 Muslim candidates in the state, out of which 18 won, while only one non-Muslim candidate could win. Congress’s ally Raijor Dal also won two seats, one seat was won by a Muslim candidate while the other seat was won by Akhil Gogoi.

35 Muslim MLAs were elected to the 140-member Kerala Assembly, of which 30 are from the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance. This includes 8 MLAs from the Congress Party and 22 MLAs from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

80% win rate

The success rate of Muslim candidates within the Congress alliances in Assam and Kerala was around 80 percent. In West Bengal, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved two-third majority by winning 206 seats and thus removed the 15-year-old TMC government from power. In Assam too, NDA is ready to form the government for the third consecutive time, having secured 102 out of 126 seats. Actor-politician Vijay’s party, TVK, emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu. There has been a change of government in Kerala after 10 years and the Congress led alliance is once again in a position to form the government.

BJP won three seats in Kerala

In the Kerala Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended its electoral drought in the state by winning three seats. The party finished second in many constituencies. After counting of votes, BJP secured second position in Tiruvalla, Palakkad, Malampuzha, Attingal, Kasaragod and Manjeshwar seats. In Palakkad, senior leader Shobha Surendran faced a tough contest and lost to UDF’s Ramesh Pisharody by a margin of about 13,000 votes.

P. Sudhir stood second in Attingal and was also successful in increasing the party’s vote share. BJP candidates stood second in Malampuzha, Kasaragod and Manjeshwar. BJP won a limited number of seats but the results indicate that the party has been successful in strengthening its grassroots support base in many areas. According to the election results, the United Democratic Front (UDF) won a landslide victory by winning 102 out of 140 seats. The CPI(M) led Left Democratic Front (LDF) had to be content with only 35 seats.
