Double pipeline system will be implemented in Delhi, separate water supply will be provided for drinking and domestic use.
In view of the increasing population in Delhi and the ever-increasing demand for water, new initiatives have been started to make water management more effective. Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is preparing to implement double pipeline system to streamline domestic water consumption. Under this model, 2 separate pipeline networks will be developed in the houses. Through one line, clean drinking water will be provided for purposes like drinking, cooking and bathing, while the other line will supply treated water, which can be used for washing clothes, cleaning utensils, flushing and other non-potable household purposes.
thousands daily MGD water needs
According to Delhi Jal Board officials, the capital requires about 1250 MGD (million gallons per day) of water per day, while the current water supply is about 250 MGD less than the demand. Due to increasing population and urban expansion, the demand for water is expected to increase further in the coming years, due to which the challenge of water management may become more serious. Keeping this situation in mind, DJB has prepared a plan for double pipeline system for better utilization and conservation of water resources.
2 separate pipelines will get laid
Under the proposed double pipeline system, two separate pipeline networks will be developed in the residential complexes of the capital. The objective of this system is to conserve drinking water and ensure more efficient use of available water resources. Officials believe that currently a large amount of drinking water is used for purposes that do not require high quality water. After the implementation of the new system, the use of treated water for these purposes will increase, which is expected to reduce the unnecessary consumption of potable water significantly.
Delhi Jal Board is conducting preliminary level studies towards implementing the proposed double pipeline system in the capital. According to officials, at present the feasibility of this system is being assessed in the new DDA flats developed in Dwarka and Narela areas. Apart from this, study is going on on the possibilities of implementing this model in some residential societies of Dwarka. Under the scheme, it is being considered to start water supply on the basis of this model in a phased manner in the residential complexes where the necessary structure of double pipeline will be available. With this, separate water supply systems can be developed for drinking water and domestic use.
Officials say that the treated water coming out of Delhi’s existing sewage treatment plant (STP) meets the prescribed quality standards. Nevertheless, work is being done to provide better quality treated water for domestic use. For this, new STP is being developed with more advanced technology, where the level of water purification will be better.
According to experts, the treated water provided under the double pipeline system will not be suitable for direct drinking, but its purification level will be so good that it can be used safely in domestic purposes. This water can be used for washing clothes, cleaning utensils, flushing toilets and other non-drinking needs. The main objective of this system is to limit the use of high quality drinking water only to those purposes where it is actually required. This will make it possible to save a large amount of drinking water and ensure more effective use of available water resources.
