A 'Dry Day' is usually observed on 15th August, Independence Day. But 'Dry Day' may be observed on other dates in different states and cities as per local government notification. Liquor shops, wine stores and other retail outlets selling liquor are compulsorily closed on 'Dry Day'. Bars, pubs and restaurants are also prohibited from selling alcohol.
When is 'Dry Day' declared?
The dates of 'dry days' are fixed by the government. To help maintain law and order and ensure peaceful celebrations, the day is usually declared on national holidays, major religious festivals and other special occasions. Common 'dry days' across the country include Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti. Apart from the central government, state governments can also declare additional 'dry days' for local festivals, religious events and as per election rules. August 15, 2026 Saturday – Independence Day: This day is a 'dry day' as it is a national holiday. Liquor shops and other shops selling liquor will remain closed during this period. Sale and serving of liquor in bars, pubs and restaurants will remain legally prohibited.
25/26 August, 2026 Tuesday/Wednesday – Eid-e-Milad / Milad-un-Nabi and Thiruvonam – Eid-e-Milad is celebrated as the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. This day falls on the 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. As per local government notification, some states and cities may observe 'Dry Day' on August 25 to celebrate Eid-e-Milad (Milad-un-Nabi). According to a notification by the state excise department, sale of liquor will be banned in Kerala on this day due to Thiruvonam.
When are the 'dry days' in September?
4th September, Janmashtami – As per local Excise Notification, 'Dry Day' rules may apply in some states and cities.
September 14 (Monday) – 'Dry Day' will be observed only in Maharashtra and Karnataka on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. September 25 (Friday) – Anant Chaturdashi will be a dry day only in Maharashtra.
