Nature’s fiercest form was witnessed in the southern part of Japan on Tuesday, when a very powerful earthquake with an initial magnitude of 7.1 was recorded there. According to foreign media and the Japan Meteorological Agency, this powerful shock hit Kumamoto Prefecture in the Kyushu region, which shook the entire southern Japan. The intensity of the tremors was so high that many buildings near the epicenter were razed to the ground and a scene of devastation was seen on the roads.

According to reports, the highway overpass on the Kyushu Expressway in Yatsushiro has been heavily damaged. In the same city, the pedestrian portion of a bridge also collapsed. Uki city fire department informed the broadcaster that after the earthquake, incidents of fire were reported at many places, due to which they are continuously receiving emergency calls.

Tsunami alert and appeal of PM Sanae Takaichi

As a precautionary measure, a tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas immediately after the earthquake and waves up to 1 meter high were expected, although this alert was later withdrawn. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, while talking to journalists, has appealed to the people of the affected areas to remain fully alert in view of the possibility of another earthquake of similar intensity in the coming time. He said the administration was taking stock of the damage and initial reports suggested some people were injured.

Electricity cut to more than 48 thousand houses

The disaster also caused massive damage to infrastructure. According to data from Kyushu Electric, about 48,300 homes in Kumamoto Prefecture alone have lost power. The power company has appealed to the citizens to stay away from broken power lines and immediately report any danger to the administration. Major prefectures such as Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki are still on administrative alert and relief operations are being carried out rapidly.
