Due to heavy rains in Nepal, flood risk increases in Bihar, rivers in spate, high alert issued
Patna: The effect of continuous rains in the border areas of Nepal and Bihar is now visible in the districts of North and East Bihar. A rapid rise in the water level of Mahananda, Kosi and their tributaries is being recorded, due to which the possibility of flood has deepened in many districts. Due to this, the administration has increased vigilance in sensitive areas including Purnia, Katihar, Kishanganj and Supaul and has advised people living in low-lying areas to be careful.
River flowing above danger mark
Mahananda river passing through Purnia and Katihar region is flowing above the danger mark at many places. The river water has gradually started spreading in the low-lying areas and agricultural lands, due to which the concern of farmers and villagers has increased. The Administration and Water Resources Department has intensified monitoring of embankments and special teams have been deployed at potential risk spots.

According to officials, due to continuous water coming from Nepal and West Bengal, the water level of Mahananda is rising rapidly. A rapid rise in the river level has been recorded during the last 24 hours. Due to this, waterlogging has started taking place in many areas and rural connectivity routes are also being affected.
Road connectivity has been affected due to flood water reaching some villages of Katihar district. However, it is a matter of relief that water has not yet reached most of the residential areas. The administration is continuously working to prevent erosion and keep the embankments safe.
Employees’ holidays canceled
At the same time, the water flow on Kosi Barrage located at Veerpur in Supaul district has also increased rapidly. For the first time in the monsoon season, the water discharge here has crossed the figure of 50 thousand cusecs. In view of the rising water level, the Water Resources Department has canceled the leaves of engineers and employees. The administration says that the coming few days are going to be very important. If the rains continue in Nepal, the flood situation in many parts of Seemanchal and North Bihar may become serious. In such a situation, monitoring of embankments and relief preparations are being continuously strengthened.
