E-rickshaw license rules tightened in Delhi: Dealer certificate invalid, now 10 days mandatory training
In view of the increasing e-rickshaw accidents and traffic chaos in Delhi, the Transport Department has made major changes in the licensing rules of e-rickshaw and e-cart drivers. Now the training certificates issued by e-rickshaw dealers will not be valid for obtaining license. Applicants must undergo training only from government recognized training institutes.
Under the new rules, persons wishing to become e-rickshaw or e-kart drivers will have to complete 10 days of mandatory training. Only after submitting the training certificate, they will be able to appear in the driving examination of the Transport Department. The e-rickshaw or e-kart will be registered in their name only after passing the examination and getting the license.
According to the Transport Department, there was a provision of 10 days of training from the time the e-rickshaw was introduced. Earlier this responsibility was given to the manufacturing companies and their dealers, but complaints were received that certificates were being issued at many places without training. Investigation of this matter is also going on.
The Government has now authorized such training schools and institutes which have proper arrangements for practical and safety training. In the training, traffic rules, safe driving, parking, driving at intersections, night driving and how to deal with emergency situations like brake failure, tire burst and fire will be taught.
There are around two lakh registered e-rickshaws in Delhi, while more than three lakh illegal e-rickshaws are estimated to be operating. There are preparations to run a special campaign against them also. According to statistics, the number of deaths in e-rickshaw accidents has increased continuously. 10 people died in the year 2021, 8 in 2022, 18 in 2023, 20 in 2024 and 36 in 2025. Overloading, driving in the wrong direction, jumping red lights and inadequate training are considered to be the main reasons for accidents.
