E-rickshaws were being stopped remotely through Chinese app ‘Bat-BMS’, Central Government is strict; 2 apps removed from Play Store
A big issue has come to light regarding the cyber security of vehicle management systems connected to the internet. After the news of e-rickshaw being shut down remotely through China’s smartphone app ‘Bat-BMS’, the central government has become completely strict. Taking immediate action in this matter, the government said on Friday that it had received information about two such suspicious apps, which have now been completely removed (banned) from the App Store.
IT Secretary instructed app stores to be cautious
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Cyber Security Conference organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Information Technology (IT) Secretary S. Krishnan confirmed this action. He said,
“That’s right… we were made aware of two such apps and both have been removed from the App Store.”
The IT Secretary further stressed that platforms like Google Play Store and Apple App Store should take necessary precautions. The government will officially raise this serious issue with the operators of the app stores, so that in future no such potentially harmful apps are available to common users.
There was a stir after the video went viral on social media
This entire matter came into discussion on Thursday when some videos surfaced on social media and the internet. It was claimed in these news and videos that some e-rickshaws running on the roads were being shut down remotely using the ‘remote shutdown’ feature of China’s smartphone app ‘BAT-BMS’. After these videos went viral, there was widespread concern across the country regarding the security of e-vehicles and breach in the digital control system, taking cognizance of which the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has taken this big step. At present, further technical investigation is going on in this matter.
