Earthquake of 6.2 magnitude in Afghanistan, tremors felt till Delhi-Lahore

New Delhi: A strong earthquake occurred in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan on Saturday evening. According to initial reports, its intensity was measured at 6.2 on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred at 7:04 pm Indian time and its depth was 215 kilometers. Due to the great depth, the tremors were felt in Pakistan, North-West India, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan. At present there is no news of loss of life or property.

Where was the epicenter of the earthquake?

The epicenter of this earthquake was about 81 kilometers from Kalafgan in north-eastern Afghanistan. Scientists say that earthquakes with greater depth affect a larger area, but the possibility of damage on the surface is less. Still, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake is considered a powerful earthquake. Its impact depends on the location and the infrastructure there.

Multiple earthquakes in the Indian subcontinent in 24 hours!

The earth has shaken several times in this area in the last 24 hours. On June 27, an earthquake of 3.2 magnitude struck Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh at 11:38 am. It was just 5 kilometers deep and its center was 22 kilometers north-west of Dharamshala. There was no harm due to low intensity.

Four shocks occurred in Pakistan also

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center EMSC, four earthquakes occurred in Pakistan in the last 24 hours. The strongest earthquake of 5.5 magnitude was felt in Balochistan at 8:36 am on Saturday. It was at a depth of 40 kilometers. EMSC has confirmed all these earthquakes. It is a matter of relief that no major damage has been reported from anywhere so far.

The Hindu Kush region is considered extremely sensitive to earthquakes. Here the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, hence tremors occur again and again. Experts say that a deep earthquake causes less devastation on the surface, but cracks in buildings or weak structures can collapse. At present all the agencies are keeping an eye on the situation. People are appealed not to pay attention to rumors and remain alert.
