Powerful earthquake under the sea, chaos in Flores, people asked to go to safe place
A powerful earthquake of 7.7 magnitude on Saturday morning in Indonesia left people in panic. The earthquake caused damage to buildings in many areas and some structures collapsed. According to initial information, at least 2 people have died and many have been injured.
The epicenter of the earthquake was under the sea near the Flores area. According to USGS, its center was about 68 kilometers away from Ende and at a depth of about 10 kilometers. After the strong tremors, several aftershocks were also felt. These are said to include tremors of 5.9, 5.6 and 6.1 intensity.

Tsunami warning issued
After the earthquake, BMKG had issued a tsunami warning for many coastal areas. People were advised to move away from the sea and reach safe or higher ground. The warning was lifted after about three hours, as waves less than one meter high were recorded.

Buildings damaged, people came out of their homes
Several buildings were reported damaged in Maumere and surrounding areas. Patients in the hospital were also evacuated for safety. Some videos that surfaced on social media showed buildings collapsing and people rushing out of their homes, although these videos have not been independently verified. Administration teams are taking stock of the damage and relief operations.
