Economic zone linking Singapore, Malaysia attracts $21.8B in approved investments

Of that amount, RM40.3 billion, or about 45%, has been implemented, according to a joint statement issued after the inaugural meeting of the Johor-Singapore Cooperation Ministerial Committee on Monday, according to The Straits Times.

“The approved projects were associated with 28,755 potential employment opportunities, including 12,796 jobs associated with implemented projects,” the statement said.

“The ministers welcomed the investments from Singapore and Singapore-based companies referred to the Investment Facilitation Centre – Johor by Singapore.”

The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone is located entirely in Johor, Malaysia. Singapore is a partner in the initiative, helping coordinate investment, trade and cross-border connections. Spanning more than 3,500 square kilometers, it is more than four times Singapore’s area, according to Bloomberg.

Singapore’s Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat said the zone provides a platform for the two regions to strengthen cooperation on a range of issues beyond the special economic zone, Channel News Asia reported.

He highlighted connectivity, citing improvements to cross-border taxi services, the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link and ongoing discussions on further enhancing ferry services.

Malaysia’s Minister of Economy YB Akmal Nasir said a blueprint for the zone will likely be launched by the end of this year, coinciding with the annual Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat.

“With this blueprint in place, we expect the momentum for 2027 will hopefully be higher in terms of the commitment from (both) countries,” he said.
