Election Commission Seizes Over Rs 1000 Crore in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal Ahead of Assembly Polls
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has seized assets worth over ₹1,000 crore across Tamil Nadu and West Bengal ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, highlighting intensified efforts to ensure free and fair polling.
According to official data, enforcement agencies confiscated ₹472.89 crore worth of cash, liquor, precious metals, drugs, and other inducements in West Bengal, while seizures in Tamil Nadu stood at ₹599.24 crore.
Election Seizure Management System Strengthens Monitoring
The surge in seizures follows the implementation of the Election Seizure Management System (ESMS)introduced on February 26, 2026. The digital system enables real-time tracking, coordination, and reporting of enforcement activities during elections.
The ECI emphasized that the initiative has significantly enhanced transparency and efficiency in monitoring illegal election-related activities.
Ensuring Fairness Without Inconvenience
While stepping up enforcement, the Commission has directed authorities to ensure that routine checks do not inconvenience ordinary citizens.
“District Grievance Committees have been set up to address public concerns and prevent harassment during inspections,” the Commission said in a statement.
Tamil Nadu Seizures Cross ₹1,200 Crore Mark
In a separate update, Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik revealed that total seizures in the state have crossed ₹1,262 crore. This includes ₹543 crore in cash recovered during vehicle inspections conducted by surveillance teams.
The figures underline the scale of enforcement operations being carried out in the run-up to polling.
Polling Schedule for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal
- Tamil Nadu: Voting will take place in a single phase on April 23, 2026
- West Bengal: Elections will be conducted in two phases, with the second phase scheduled for April 29, 2026
- Counting of Votes: May 4, 2026
