Electric auto shines, EVs dominate from small towns to metros, 60% share in three-wheeler market
Knews Desk- Now the color of transportation is seen changing rapidly on the roads of many cities of the country including Delhi-NCR. Whereas earlier green colored CNG autos were seen everywhere, now sky blue electric autos and e-rickshaws are running on the roads in large numbers. This change is not limited only to metros, but the presence of electric vehicles is increasing rapidly in small cities and towns also.
The electric vehicle revolution that was expected from the car market in India is currently most visible in the three-wheeler segment. From passenger carrying autos to cargo three-wheelers are now turning into electric models. People are increasingly adopting them due to low operating costs and better earnings.
According to statistics, the market share of electric three-wheelers has reached more than 60 percent in April 2026. In comparison, the combined share of CNG, petrol and diesel three-wheelers is less than 40 percent. The share of CNG vehicles is around 25 percent and the share of diesel vehicles is around 14.16 percent.
Experts believe that low fuel consumption, easy maintenance and government incentive policies are the major reasons behind the success of electric three-wheelers. E-rickshaws and electric autos have become an important means of employment and low-cost transportation, especially in small towns and rural areas. Companies like Mahindra and Bajaj are playing a major role in this fast growing market. The share of electric three-wheelers is expected to increase further in the coming years, which may see a major change in India’s transportation system.
